Trouble connecting to BFC Cyber•Mall's shopping links?
The following solution should fix the problem: |
|
If you keep getting error messages (or "page not found" messages) when you try to visit the websites of merchants featured on our shopping pages, the problem is probably being caused by your anti-virus (or internet security) software. But it's easy to fix the problem, once you know how. For several years, we have used a nifty little free (advertising supported) program called WeatherBug, which displays local weather and chirps like an insect to warn you of dangerous weather conditions, with live radar maps and all sorts of other cool features. It worked fine until we upgraded our security software. And then things suddenly started not working. WeatherBug's excellent tech support department provided us with a simple solution that made everything work perfectly again. Their solution is quoted below: |

Thank you for your inquiry. It appears that the host file on your computer may have been corrupted. This may have occurred if you recently had a virus or other security attack against your computer. Even though a virus scanner may have prevented full infestation, it could have reconfigured the host file unknowingly. Because all web browser based applications, like WeatherBug, reference the host file, these changes will affect the user experience. To fix this issue, please follow the steps below exactly as listed: 1. Open the My Computer icon on your desktop 2. Open C drive 3. Open Windows folder 4. Open System32 folder 5. Open Drivers folder 6. Open 'etc' folder 7. Right click on the hosts file and click Open (if asked what program you want to open with, choose NOTEPAD) 8. For safety reasons, PLEASE make a copy of your host file and save them in a SEPARATE Notepad file as a backup. (To open another Notepad, click on the START button in the left corner of your screen, click RUN and type in the word Notepad and click enter). 9. Look for any entries with 127.0.0.1 that do NOT simply say "localhost" next to it (without the quotation marks). This is ALL that should be listed- if you see additional text or other text next to that number, this is the error and needs to be erased. For example:
These extra entries are causing pages to display incorrectly and in turn causing the WeatherBug to function incorrectly.
10. Once you have the one line that says 127.0.0.1 localhost Click the word FILE at the top and choose SAVE. Close all the windows to get back to your main desktop. |

This solution worked well for us, and we hope it is helpful to you. Please be aware that you may have to repeat the above process when your security software is updated (and some security software packages will update themselves each time you turn on your computer).
